People watching

28 March - 2 April 2023. Thistle hall community gallery.

When hosting my first solo exhibition ‘People Watching’ at 18-years-old I had no idea where to begin.

I had mild delusion and the belief that i could just '“figure it out”.

Somehow… I did.

This exhibition pushed me far out of my comfort zone. It was surreal to see phantom billstickers with my name on them pop up around the city.

People watching - first solo exhibition

People attending an art gallery or exhibition, viewing artwork displayed on white walls, with diverse individuals engaging and conversing inside a well-lit room.

My portraiture changed when I began noticing moments instead of faces. It’s not just the person who poses well.

Audiences don’t respond to beauty alone.
They respond to truth, and truth appears in the cracks. In the almost-laugh, the held breath, and the unfinished sentence. The best portrait subject is the one who stands on the edge of something, and lets you stand there with them. It’s the person who forgets they are being watched.

Portraiture thirves in authenticity, not perfection.
